Obituary

JACKSONVILLE, FL - In humble submission to the will of God, the BROWN and SOCKWELL Family shares the earthly transition of MR. DARRIN CLIFFORD BROWN, SR. who transitioned from this earthy life to his eternal home on November 13, 2025 at Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville, Fl.

Darrin Clifford Brown was born to Marlene Geraldine Sockwell and George Brown on August 7, 1959 in Jamaica Queens, NY. He was the firstborn of six children. He attended public schools in New York City while living mostly with his maternal grandmother, Augusta Sockwell. From an early age, Darrin showed an independence and pride that was collectively recognized by his five siblings. He naturally knew how to gain access to little jobs that were helpful to adults. On weekends, Darrin shared his knowledge by showing his cousins how to make money just by offering to bag groceries at the local supermarket. He was usually in the position to pay his cousin's way to the movie theater to see his favorite karate feature films. Even though he could be a loner at times and somewhat quiet, he was very generous and never hesitated to invite his family to join him in fun games and events.

Darrin was not one to give up on goals he set for himself. He was determined to complete his high school equivalency timely so that he could successfully attend coursework at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. As the oldest of his siblings, he was prideful in being a positive a role model. He never had problems in school and was obedient and neat at home. In 1978, Darrin joined the US Army, where he was eventually stationed overseas. He remained in the Army for four years before returning to New York City. In 1993, Darrin married Iris Woods and they had three sons from that union, Darrin Jr., Brandon and Jaylon. Darrin affectionately called his sons his Lil Bear bears. He loved to tease his nephews and sons and gave most of them nicknames. When there were times when he couldn't be near his kids, he never let them forget how much he loved them and that he was always thinking of them and wanting them near him. A go-getter, Darrin established a professional music recording studio in his apartment in Tribeca for several years. He named his studio Hip Hop City and his stage name was 'D. Mechanic'. Darrin outfitted his studio with high performance equipment and learned to enhance music professionally. In short order Hip Hop City became a popular mixing studio and Darrin was well versed in the business. During his studio days Darrin worked with Wu Tang Clan, Prodigy, Fat Joe. P. Diddy, DMX amongst many others. And Darrin was instrumental in inspiring his cousin Jimmy to establish a professional recording studio in Queens.

Darrin changed direction and worked to gain a CDL license to drive tractor trailers. He started off working in the trucking industry for J.B. Hunt before moving onto Western Express. He worked to the point that he was eventually able to buy his own tractor and work as an independent contractor in Florida hauling truckloads cross country. Darrin successfully worked in the trucking business until 2024 when it became difficult due to his declining health. Darrin made his own decisions and usually stuck by them. He did not want to prolong his declining health and succumbed on November 13, 2025.

He is survived by his wife Iris; children - Darrin Jr., Brandon and Jaylon; sisters – Shelly Sockwell, Caridad Girault, Petra Brown; brothers Anthony, Steven and Brian Sockwell; Uncle Laurence David and Aunt Suzzanne, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He will be truly missed, may he rest in eternal peace.
